Born Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon on 22 March 1976in New Orleans, Louisiana. The second child of Dr John and
Betty Witherspoon, who both work in the medical profession. Her father worked as a military surgeon and so Reese
spent the first few years of her life in Germany.

When Reese was 7 she began modelling, which led to her appearance in several TV commercials. When she was 11
she came first in a Ten-State Talent Fair. Her first major role was in The Man in the Moon (1991) directed by Robert
Mulligan. In 1994, she graduated from an all-grils school in Nashville and then went to Stanford University majoring
in English Literature. This did not last long however when she accepted roles in 2 major movies, Fear (1996) and
Freeway (1996). By far her most career-boosting role was as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde (2001).

Since 1999 she has been married to Ryan Phillippe whom she met at her 21st birthday party, and then worked with
him throughout the film Cruel Intentions (1999). They have 2 children together, Ava Elizabeth and Deacon.
